For the first time, “Soso’s Daughters” — an independent theatre project founded by director Zhenya Berkovich, who in 2024 was sentenced in Russia to six years in prison in the so-called “theatre case” — is coming to Georgia.

A full repertory ensemble is travelling to Tbilisi: nine actresses and the creative team preserving Berkovich’s original artistic concept. Audiences will see the productions exactly as they were conceived and staged — with the original scenography, movement score, and performance structure carefully maintained by the troupe.

“Soso’s Daughters” is one of the most prominent independent theatre collectives of recent years: their productions have become a symbol of free artistic expression existing outside the state system. Their work has made the theatre a vital generational voice — one that continues to resonate even after the arrest of its founder.

A portion of the ticket revenue will be transferred to Zhenya Berkovich and her family.

COUNTING RHYME
25 March 2026 (Wed), 19:00
at the Griboyedov Theatre

“Counting Rhyme” is the debut production of the company and the starting point of Soso’s Daughters’ artistic journey. Based on the novella by Georgian writer Tamta Melashvili, it tells the story of a small Georgian village in the early 1990s, trapped in the Georgian–Abkhaz war. Only children, elderly people and women remain, waiting for a promised humanitarian corridor that never opens — and hope slowly turns into despair.

This is a story of war seen through the eyes of two thirteen-year-old girls — a tale of coming of age amidst catastrophe, of the fragility of life, and of how a child’s perception resists violence and death. The production blends humour with painful reality: Georgian songs coexist with a constant sense of danger, and fear does not cancel out friendship, compassion, or the stubborn will to live.

Bringing “Counting Rhyme” to Georgia carries a special significance: the company’s first production returns to the land and history from which its literary source emerged — and here, in the homeland of the book, this anti-war story resonates with particular force.

OUR TREASURE
26 March 2026 (Thu), 19:00
at the Griboyedov Theatre

“Our Treasure” is a Christmas parable by Zhenya Berkovich, told in a contemporary theatrical language. Familiar biblical figures appear as characters of today’s world: the Magi become delivery couriers debating migration, a Bethlehem policeman makes his rounds with gift bags, and a donkey and an ox reflect on stability and fear of authority.

“Our Treasure” speaks about the value of human life with tenderness, irony, and a precise emotional honesty — about how easily the miracle of a child’s birth can be overlooked amid routine, fear, and endless bureaucracy. The performance features abundant live music: the actresses sing songs set to Zhenya Berkovich’s poetry and play a wide range of instruments on stage.

The premiere took place in December 2022 — a moment when themes of life, fragility, and personal choice felt especially urgent. “Our Treasure” has since become one of the most resonant works of the Daughters of Soso theatre. It is a warm, luminous performance that gently reminds us to notice the small miracles that make life worth living.
